Wally Allen Ballroom in the Statehouse Convention Center
Little Rock, Arkansas
Every year, WFA hosts the annual “Power of the Purse” luncheon that unites over 1,000 Arkansas women to celebrate the powerful role Arkansas women can play in improving the lives of other women. Attendees are successful professional women, community leaders, active philanthropists, aspiring women, and a growing number of men!
The 2009 event included special keynote speaker, Gena Lovett, Little Rock native now employed as a Partner and COO of Alexandra Investment Management in New York. Gena is also currently the President of the 3000-member New York City Junior League. The annual “Woman of the Year in Philanthropy” award went to Alice Mahony of El Dorado for her long-time commitment to philanthropy. Past recipients of the “Woman of the Year in Philanthropy” have been Jo Luck, CEO of Heifer International, and Pat Lile, retired President and CEO of Arkansas Community Foundation, and Sharon Allen, retired head of Blue Cross Blue Shield.
The luncheon is WFA’s signature event informing the public of the work made possible through their gifts and educating them on the myriad issues impacting Arkansas women today. The money raised at the luncheon allows WFA to extend grants to deserving projects and programs which serve women and girls in every corner of the state. This luncheon also helps support WFA’s efforts to encourage girls in the Girls of Promise program to pursue careers in science, math, and technology – fields Arkansas urgently needs if communities and businesses are to prosper
